There is a carved wooden box in my office at home that is special for a couple of reasons. It was a gift from a family member who loves art, and it was carved from a burl of a tree. Burls are formed when the grain of a tree grows in a deformed manner, often producing knotted growths which look undesirable. In fact, burls are coveted by many who do specialized woodworking. The irregular grains of burl wood are used in veneers, turnings and carvings. If you have seen deformed burls and know the beauty of wood pieces made from them, you can really appreciate the artistry involved. It is a constant reminder of what God can do with lives submitted to Him. He can make something beautiful.
